Lion spatial capture-recapture project in Kruger National Park

I am working with Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and SANParks to estimate density, abundance, sex ratio and home range size of lions over the age of 1 year in sections of the Kruger National Park, using Bayesian spatial capture–recapture models. In 2023 we surveyed the northern part of Kruger, and in 2024 we are surveying the central part. Discover how photographs can inform us on the status of the lion population and form a scientific base for conservation measures!

PhD: Lions, wild dogs and humans in the GLFTCA - The ecology of coexistence

I am currently a PhD student at Stellenbosch University. My project focuses on the distribution, movement behavior, and connectivity of lion and wild dog populations in the northern part of Kruger National Park (South Africa) and the adjacent Limpopo National Park (Mozambique). It also has a social chapter that will investigate the attitudes of local communities toward carnivore conservation, and identify the enablers and barriers for socio-ecological sustainability.
